Burroughs was sentenced to 20 years in prison with all but 20 years suspended - above the state's sentencing guidelines - for abusing a woman with a 1-year-old child inside an area home, according to the state's attorney's office.
The 37-year-old Upper Marlboro resident was found guilty of second-degree rape in February.
According to prosecutors, on Oct. 22 and Oct. 23, 2022, Burroughs went to his victim's home, with whom they share a child, and when she asked him to leave, he refused.
Burroughs then went to the woman's bedroom and sexually assaulted her, they said, while their infant child was in another room inside the home.
The incident was captured on a home audio recording.
"The charges against this deputy are very concerning,” Prince George's County Sheriff John D.B. Carr stated when Burroughs was charged and suspended. “Law enforcement officers take an oath to protect others, not abuse them.
“Those who live and work in Prince George’s County deserve the very best from its public safety community, and the behavior alleged in this case runs counter to that expectation.”
At Burroughs' sentencing, Prince George's County State's Attorney Aisha Braveboy said that the victim and her parents were present, and she "provided a detailed account of the trauma she endured and how the assault continues to affect her."
The judge presiding over the case noted that the case "was most troubling because the rape happened in the victim's home with their youngest daughter in close proximity."
"We are pleased with this above guidelines sentence and believe that it was appropriate under the circumstances presented in this case," Braveboy stated. "Our office will continue to seek justice for all, without prejudice and will diligently work to protect our victims."
